September 2009 trip with Mat, Sam, Sal, Jac & Cat to the Bromo-Tengger-Semeru National Park at Cemoro Lawang and Ngadisari East Java, overlooking Mt Bromo, Mt Batok and Mt Semeru in the distance, for the Yadnya Kasada annual Tenggerese festival celebrating the volcano gods of Mt Bromo. Preceded by a short visit to Sidoarjo to view the "mud flood" phenomena, still active to this day. Driving from Surabaya through Probolinggo and return.

  • Early morning view of Batok and Semeru with the curious eroded formations on the floor of the "Sand Sea" below.
  • Mt Batok with the gray rim of Mt Bromo peeking out from behind.
  • Motorcycle tracks accros the great "Sand Sea' with Mt Batok in the background.
  • The Ponies' view down to the Poten valley below, from the midway base camp at the foot of Mt Brromo.
  • Our ponies gaze wistfully off into the distance, hoping they will not be thrown into the crater that evening along with their fowl and capra bretheren.
